Welcome to the Peninsula
SPCA website. The Peninsula SPCA and animal control facility
serves Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and York County. Our
goals are long ranged and widespread. We do not hope to find
every animal a home, but strive to find as many suitable
homes for our animals as possible. Compassionate placement
separates our SPCA and animal control facility from a pet
shop or any other profiteering business. Seeing that an
animal is kept alive regardless of circumstances has no
humane reflection. Placing an animal in a comfortable and
appropriate environment sets us apart from pet shops.
Stray, abandoned, abused and unwanted animals can find
temporary care and shelter at the Peninsula SPCA. We try to
find the owners of our stray animals and homes for the
unwanted ones. In doing this, our staff tries to educate so
that these animals do not have to end up back at a shelter
or pound. A few ideas or hints can go a long way towards the
making of a happy pet owner as well as a happy pet.
As an animal control shelter, as well as an SPCA, we enforce
animal related laws, pick up stray dogs that are running
loose (enforce the leash law), investigate animal neglect or
cruelty, pick up deceased animals on public roadways, as
well as animals that have been injured. We also help in
problems of our local wildlife, trying to come up with a
solution that will make the person happy as well as the
particular animal, be it a racoon, opossum, squirrel, etc.
If we can't help or answer a question, we try to find
someone who can.
We are on 24-hour emergency call every day. You can call our
daytime phone number (595-1399) at anytime and you will find
out who to call if you have a problem after hours. But
remember, it is for emergencies only! We consider an
emergency call as a stray animals that you find or see that
is either sick or injured or in need of medical help. We
pick the animal up and transport it to the emergency
verterinary clinic. We do not have a vet at the shelter. If
you have a pet that is sick or injured and it is after
hours, call 874-8115 and they will help you.
For some history, the SPCA started in the early forties
housing animals in private homes. We became a sheltered
society in 1959 on Salters Creek Road in Hampton. We were
strickly the SPCA until 1976 when we took over Animal
Control services for Newport News and Hampton. In 1981
Poquoson requested that we handle their animal control and
then we began to house animals for York County shortly
after. In 1983 we moved to our present facility because of
the much needed space and we have grown to what you know us
to be today.
We hope you will enjoy browsing our website and that you
will learn something new about our facility. Please take
time to e-mail your comments and suggestions. |
